Day Seventy – December 9, 2010

Looking back 10 years ago today…

No insights, no revelations, just a normal day doing laundry and getting ready for family for the holidays. Some days are just days but still filled with apple creativity!

Shifting To Today In 2020: I’m a flurry in my studio lately! I am forever grateful for my year of apples for giving me my love of creating art back to me. The apples were all created as small works on paper – 5″ x 5″ – easy to manage a small daily piece. What I find interesting is that I’ve done small works of that size since college. I was fortunate to attend a European Arts Program via the University of Massachusetts one summer I was in college. We traveled to France and Belgium for 6 weeks. I created lots of small studies of the countryside and Mediterranean sea. We stayed for 4 of those weeks at The Château de La Napoule. The La Napoule Art Foundation is an American non-profit foundation that still exists to support artists. I’d love to go back someday! Those little pieces from 30 years ago set a stage I didn’t even realize until today. What’s interesting is that I’ve again gravitated to studies in 5″ x 5″ ~ perhaps a comfort zone. The current pieces are very different. You can see some of them on my Instagram page.

I’m now working on large canvas – something I love but requires me to keep extremely conscious of my body. Painting large is very physical believe it or not. At least it is for my AS body. It’s the leaning over, the body postures that twist my spine or take my neck forward off of vertical. I’ve become pretty good at remembering to use my SI belt and a neck brace at times when my body needs the extra support. And… like this post “Pattern Play No. 2” I am still using patterns in my work as well. I’m just finishing up a commission where I took some elements of the curtain fabric and rug in the bedroom where the piece is going and developed the painting. Oh how I love to create for specific people in mind, just like my apples for all of you! A glimpse of that piece is on my Instagram too… and more will be posted soon.
