Day Forty Six – November 15, 2010
Looking back 10 years ago today…
My “Post It” apple was all about what I call “art in real life”!
I went to art school in the early 90’s. We had one computer for the entire department and it needed a large room to contain it. Yes, I’m THAT old! But because of this I was taught to create with materials in my hands. Pen, ink, clay. I was taught perspective and drafting in the old school manner not with CAD which I believe allows me to eye the correct angle in a composition instead of relying on a computer to tell me how it should be. I learned how to mix colors on a palette, not be able to simply select it from the screen.
I do create some digital art (you can see some of it on my IGTV) but as much as I like the instant gratification and flexibility, I know that the power of what my hand touches and applies, holds me and my essence as the creator, in a more ethereal way. And these “real life” pieces held in the viewers hands or sight, convey what the bits and bytes simply never can.
I am moving more and more into only selling original art because of this. I want to send my creativity, my essence and joy, out into the world, to you , so that your hands may touch where the paint lives and your eyes may bring these images into the backs of your retina. Using your senses to experience art and how it moves you is key to a piece’s magic and that magic, in turn, to the emotion once it transfers. These things connect us “in real life” instead of connecting representations of them or us. This is what I wish for ~ crave ~ when I create.
Although I’ve been adamant about creating physical art, I realize that I have moved more digitally in other areas of my life since 2010. I’m going to look for more ways to go old school in life and get out of the online world into the real world once again because I believe it is that important. To start… I think it’s time to use Post-It notes once again!
