Henrietta Muskowits is one of the Artists in Marguerite Jill Dye’s classes at the Killington Summerfest, Killington, Vermont.

Moved to Killington, Vermont, in 2003 from Chelmsford, Massachusetts.  Received a BS in Education with a Minor in Art.  Studied with Ann Schecter at the Whistler House in Lowell, MA, with Carlton Plummer at U. of MA, Lowell, and with Nancy Russo in Westford, MA.  After retiring from a thirty-plus career as a reading specialist and head of reading department, I am attempting to return to painting – finding that it’s NOT like “riding a bike.”

Amanda Unrein started  United Voices for Ankylosing Spondylitis after receiving the diagnosis of AS about two years ago. Amanda writes beautifully about the experiences of dealing with AS on her blog and as a guest writer on Fight Like A Girl Club. Her children are huge supporters of their Mom and wanted to create an apple too. Thank you Unrein Family for all that you do to “set things straight” in the fight for greater understanding of Ankylosing Spondylitis. Alexandra decided to draw this beautiful train because she feel that everyone needs to “get on board” the AS awareness train! Well, I couldn’t agree more!

Michael Smith

This clever piece from Michael Smith, a.k.a. “Spondyville” (a must see website for people with AS) exemplifies what is truly great about how art happens – just add creativity. Pull two disparate ideas together in a unique way and viola!  Marcel Duchamp created  Étant donnés in secret from 1946 to 1966 in his Greenwich Village studio.  It is a tableau, visible only through a peep hole in a wooden door. In Duchamp’s piece, a lamplight sits where Michael has placed an Apple.   The title of this piece is  Étant pommés! More about Marcel Duchamp and the permanent exhibit here.

Sean Ryder

Sean is an amazing artist – he also happens to be a bio-chemist and an associate professor at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. His interests are highlighted in this piece.  It’s drawn in graphite to emulate the style of an 1800’s era developmental biologist and naturalist. He also happens to have AS and is the man behind the curtain with the Ankylosing Spondylitis Awareness Project or ASAP. Please check out Hurting but hopeful, the website of ASAP.

Miriam Cassell

The versatile artistic expressions of Miriam Cassell have received wide critical acclaim for over five decades. Her life size work in pastel paintings of people, book art constructions, collages, prints, photography, wall hangings, multimedia installations and wearable art have been shown in numerous museums and galleries. Titled “How Do You Like Them Apples?” – I like them a lot – Thank you Miriam!

Grace McKee

Grace McKee is an amazing artist from Apollo Beach, Florida and is currently working on GYOTAKU which is Japanese for “fish rubbing.”  Gyotaku is an ancient form of record keeping. Fishermen would place paint or ink directly on their catch and press it onto fabric or paper.  Grace teaches workshops on this method too – a messy, fun way to get into the spirit of the Japanese people and create art at the same time.  Her image combines her GYOTAKU with Art Apples!

Anna West
